Wasn't Fred MacMurray the actor.
But Paul Rhymer called Ted MacMurray "Fred" all the time, just to mess with him.
Over time, he became "Fred" to everyone.
Conversely, Fred Stembottom eventually became "Ted" on the show - thanks to Rhymer's sly sense of humor!
