Vic calls Old Man Mulraney, who lives over his jewelry store. He wants to buy Sade a wristwatch and a nice Eastern Star pin. Mulraney's boy will run them over and stop at Croucher's to grab a quart of ice cream.

Since Sade really dislikes the lodge (and are we to discern that Vic belongs to the Order of the Eastern Star?) why on earth would he buy her such a gift?
Theory: Originally, Rhymer was going to make Vic a Mason (Eastern Star is some female division of Masonism, I think) - but Mason's aren't known to cotton to ridicule, so he swiftly concocted our beloved Sacred Stars of the Milky Way as a less contentious target.
ReplyDeleteI've since read in an article I found that Rhymer's college fraternity was somewhat secret (w/rituals) so they may have played a part as well.
